CLARA aus Kathmandu (Sonntag, 20. Mai 2007)

Liebe Gruesse,
Clara

CLARA aus Kathmandu - A WORD FOR THE TIBETANS (Freitag, 18. Mai 2007)
Kommentar zur Homepage: Climbing a mountain in Tibet is one thing - being confronted with the people another ...
In the basecamp there were a lot of Tibetans. As some of you know, only in October 2006 the Chinese shot some Tibetans at the border of Nepal and Tibet right next to Cho Oyu basecamp. We obseved the pass every day when we where in the basecamp. Caravans of Yaks walked across the glacier - legally. Only during the night the refugees tried it. Some of them hid in tents in our basecamp.
One day the Chinese apparently caught some again and for this reason all the Tibetans had to leave the base-camp and could only come back if they paid US50 each... this is one of the stories we learned during our expedition.
The Tibetans or "Yak-men" are extremly friendly and helpful people. When I got back from my first summit trial and after my success Nygmal, our Tibetan boy, helped me a great deal, cheering me up to make it back. They always have a smile on their lips ...

As you know I started a donation campagne to support Tibetan orphans in India. Please if you have not donated anything yet, o so know. You would do me a favour and those wonderful people!

CLARA aus Kathmandu - THE CLIMB (Freitag, 18. Mai 2007)
Kommentar zur Homepage: Dear all,
Thank you so much for your congratulations for reaching Cho Oyu summit as well as my birthday! I was deeply moved and impressed by the mutlitude of postings! Thank you also to Markus and my parents for updating it on a regular basis!!

Where shall I start? These past 5 weeks were though but beautiful and I will never be able to tell the whole story but I will try to share some impressions with you here.
Cho Oyu is truely a Godess. Its beauty is undeniable and we we were able to admire her every morning looking at her from the breakfast table. All the restdays we spend in the Basecamp (BC) we were constanly fixing her and studying the route which we could almost see in its entity. A long walk in along the morraine, then up the killer-slope, a 350m ascent on a scree, to camp 1 at 6400m. I was usually on my way with Laexel, a German, who I formed a good team with. The way from camp 1 to camp 2 (7100m) leads over two nasty icefalls which we both hated but also kind of liked. Both made me vomit yellowish liquids and cough till my stomach hurt... The way from camp 2 to canmp 3 (7500m) was for me the worst part. A simple snow slope - 400m up that took me between 6 and 7 hours. Both times I went up there my back hurt and again I had to through up eiher on the way or afterwards in the tent.
The summit day was interesting with a variety of mountain facets: First snow-slope in the dark - without a functioning head- torch... but then a most beautiful passage up the yellow band, a rock passage of easy climbing. Followed by scree and a snowfield. Up another rock-band and then the 1km long plateau which took us ages to cross. Unfortunately it got foggy and we could not find the summit. It got dangerous to find the way back so we decided we give up although only about 30m from the summit according to the altitud-meter. So we started going down and then I said, \\\"no that cannot be it - we have gotten so far!\\\" So I decided to mark the way with my backpack and skiing- poles and suddenly I saw the little red flag - THE SUMMIT! Laexel and I shaveled our tired bodies towards the little hill with the summit flags which we reached after 11 hours.
If you ask me for emotions - there were none. I thought on the summit - \\\"Hey Clara cheer up, you have made it\\\" but nothing. I knew there is still a long way down and the most dangerous about climbing an 8000m peak is getting down because that is when accidents happen and altitude sickness kick in because the climbers are exhausted.
And really we got lost in the fog... I almost paniced because even if I have had bivacs before this is a No-no in the Himalayas! Luckily we were able to find the fixed ropes and we got down to camp 3 safely after 4-5 hours of descent.
Since then a lot more has happened. Getting back to basecamp was a torture for me. On the next day we took down camp 3, went down to camp 3 - had to leave the tent because it was frozen in the ice, climbed ad abseiled down to camp 1 - took down the tent in camp 1 - and had to walk out to basecamp where I arrived at 9 pm. I was shattered. I could barely stand on my feet anymore, my back was so sore that I was not able to lift my head anymore only if I used my hands. The next morning I had to pack everything within 30 minutes and walk out of the valley. A truck-drive that killed my back and the next morning at 2 am we left for the Tibetan-Napalese border - no food untill 10 am ... at the border I collapsed three times - too tired to stand on my own feet. I could not believe it how weak I was!! At 7 pm the same day we finally arrived in Kathmandu where we met the other members of the expedition who had left the BC a couple of days before us.
When Franz came to see me and congratulated me I realized for the first time \\\"Hey I have done it, I have climbed an 8000m peak - not everyone does this!\\\" (Thank you Franz for making me realize it finally!)

And now? I look like a chicken ... All my muscles and fat have vanished - my nose and chin are falling a part (the extreme sun) and I am still weak - but at least I do not walk like a drunkard anymore! But I am happy. I enjoy Kathmandu where the monsoon has started so it is not too hot. I have 3 more days here (back in Vienna on 22.May in the morning) which I need to settle myself and my thoughts. I took a hot bath by candle light (electricity was out when we arrived) and I am looking forward to eat a Wiener Schnitzel that is something Laexel and I talked about all the time in the high camps!

My resumee of the whole adventure? Altitude makes you sick - it is invisible but it eats you up, makes you feel body parts you have never felt before. It kills your appetite, you do not want to drink anymore but have to, your stomach turns and hurts and still - I cannot get enough. It is such a beautiful world and it gets easier the more often you go up. - I got to know the limits of my body - there really is a point were your feet just leave you ...

Thank you Laexel for being my partner! I think we motivated each other a great deal. And thank you to Franz and Oliver for also being part of the team. We met eachother via the internet and still it worked out fine although some people thought this was a bad starting point!

My best wishes from Kathmandu and let\\\'s party when I am back!

I am happy to have the summit but I am especially looking forward to coming back to my friends and family after this tough period of time!
Clara
